The Pirates announced today that they have placed Schenn on the Development List, meaning he will no longer pitch in the 2023 season.

The Development List is a system used to manage prospects with pitching restrictions, such as in this case.

Schenn threw a lot of innings in college before being drafted.
Selected by the Pirates with the No. 1 overall pick in last July’s draft, Skens started at the rookie level, making five appearances at Single-A and Double-A, totaling 6 2/3 innings.

In that time, he allowed four earned runs on five hits and two walks, but also struck out 10 batters.

He threw a whopping 122 2/3 innings at Louisiana State University, where he was drafted. This explains why he hasn’t thrown many innings in the pros this season.

Pirates manager Ben Cherington made it clear early on that he didn’t plan on giving him many innings this season, and it looks like he followed through.

It happened sooner than expected. Originally, he was given a 20-inning limit, but he ended up pitching fewer than that.

He was expected to face off against former college teammate and No. 2 overall pick Dylan Crouse on Thursday, but the move will prevent him from doing so.

Charrington said through the club’s official channels that the organization is pleased with the positive results Skens has shown in his short time with the club, noting that he has “accomplished everything we set out to do in 2023.”

“He will focus on his offseason preparation in preparation for 2024, which will be his first full season with the organization,” he said, adding that he will not make any more live appearances for the remainder of the season.

Skens is the sixth player in Pirates franchise history to be selected with the first overall pick. He is the first pitcher since Gerrit Cole in 2011.
