Joe Kelly, who joined the Dodgers, conceded No. 17 to Ohtani

Veteran right-handed reliever Joe Kelly, 35, has signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers and had his number retired.

The Dodgers announced on Wednesday that they have agreed to terms with Kelly on a one-year contract. The team also disclosed the value of the deal, which is worth $8 million over one year.

The team did not release his number. The team’s official social media accounts posted a photo of Kelly without his jersey number.월카지노

Kelly wore No. 17 when he signed with the Dodgers in 2019. He kept the number when he was traded to the Dodgers during the 2023 season.

This time, however, he has retired the number. The team’s official website lists his number as 99.

If he does, he’ll be the third player to wear the number, joining Manny Ramirez and Hyun-jin Ryu.

He retired No. 17 because another player with that number is set to join the Dodgers. Shohei Ohtani, who recently signed a massive 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers.

According to USA Today Major League Baseball writer Bob Nightingale, the Dodgers asked Kelly if he would be willing to change his number in preparation for the Ohtani signing.

The Dodgers apparently didn’t hesitate to make the offer.

Kelly previously wore No. 58 with the St. Louis Cardinals and No. 56 with the Boston Red Sox.

His wife, Ashley, had previously campaigned on social media for Ohtani to come to the Dodgers and wear No. 17, showing off her collection of jerseys and memorabilia in various sizes.
