Kim Ki-dong, who was recognized for his leadership at the Pohang Steelers, is expected to take the helm of FC Seoul.
According to the soccer world, Kim Ki-dong is reportedly in talks to take over as FC Seoul’s head coach. “We are in contract negotiations with coach Kim Ki-dong,” said an FC Seoul club official.
“It is understood that Seoul has offered Kim Ki-dong the highest salary in Korea,” said a soccer insider, adding, “As long as there are no major problems, he will go to Seoul.”
Seoul is currently without a head coach after Ahn Ik-soo resigned in August, with Kim Jin-gyu serving as acting head coach for the remainder of the season. The club started the 2023 season in the top half of the table, but went downhill after the midway point, eventually falling to the bottom split and finishing seventh. Seoul are desperate to rebound next season and have reportedly selected Kim Ki-dong as the right man for the job.랭크카지노
Kim already has a proven track record at Pohang. Kim, who played for Pohang from 2003 to 2012, has led the team to consistently good results since taking over in 2019.
In 2019, his first year in charge, he led Pohang to a fourth-place finish in the K League 1, followed by a third-place finish the following year. In 2021, they finished ninth in the league but finished runners-up in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League. In 2022, they finished third in the K League 1 and second this year. This year, they also won the FA Cup.
Kim Ki-dong’s achievements are even more significant considering that Pohang’s main players leave the team every year due to the lack of money from their parent company. Fans have even nicknamed him “Ki-Dong Magic” because of this. In 2020, he won the K League 1 Coach of the Year award, a rare honor for a third-place team.
Kim Ki-dong’s Pohang finished in the top four every season except for the 2021 season (9th). In 2021, they finished runners-up in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League despite a drop in league form.
Kim Ki-dong re-signed with Pohang last year. His contract runs until 2025. As such, Seoul will need to offer a substantial compensation to keep him.
Seoul currently has several players who were coached by Kim in Pohang. Kim Sang-hyeop, Lee Seung-mo, Kwon Wan-kyu, Ilyuchenko, and Palosevic are some of the players who played for Pohang before moving to Seoul. That’s why Kim Ki-dong has no problem playing his soccer in Seoul. There are also rumors of several Pohang players moving to Seoul.
Pohang’s next move is already being talked about. According to soccer insiders, Pohang is considering handing over the reins to KIM Ki-dong’s technical director, Park Tae-ha, if his move to Seoul becomes a reality.
The club and Park have already reached a rough agreement. If Seoul officially announces the appointment of Kim Ki-dong, Pohang is expected to announce Park’s appointment as soon as possible.
Park is one of Pohang’s top “legends. He has played for Pohang for the entirety of his career, with the exception of a stint in the commercial army. His coaching career also began in Pohang. As a coach, he helped Pohang win the 2007 K League title with Sergio Farias.
He then moved on to the national team, guiding Heo Jung-moo to the round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. In 2012, he took over as Seoul’s head coach and won another K League title.
Park then moved to China in 2015. He made his professional coaching debut with Chinese professional soccer’s Jianben Fooder, where he remained until 2008. He then briefly managed the Chinese Women’s National Team B before taking over as the technical director of the Chinese Football Association in 2020.
