“The batting speed has accelerated by 10 kilometers.” The champion second baseman who led the loss of Ryu Hyun-jin has become indispensable now

Shin Min-jae started the game against the Hanwha Eagles in the opening game of the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul on the 23rd and recorded two hits, one run and three RBIs in four times at bat.

Notably, his timely two-run homer off Ryu was impressive. With the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the second inning with two outs, Shin hit Ryu’s 145-kilometer fastball to make a timely two-run homer to left-handed ground. Shin, who completed multi-hit by reporting a timely one-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning, led his team to victory.

“My batting speed has increased since the spring camp. I went back and forth last year, but this year I have a consistent batting performance,” Shin said after the match. “My batting speed has improved by more than 10 kilometers on average compared to last year.”

What is the secret behind the faster batting speed? “I tried to hit the ball before, but now I try to swing while the ball is passing by. I used to hit it off, but now I swing on my way, so if (the ball) hits me, I get faster speed,” Shin said.

He directly dealt with Ryu, whom he had only seen on TV. Shin said, “(Ryu) is a pitcher with good ball control, so I tried to play in a fast count. As he only throws about 2 percent of changeups to left-handed hitters, I was thinking of two things: fastball and curveball. I tried to hit fastball before the second strike, and I think it turned out well because I thought of fastball first after the second strike,” Shin said.

His defense also improved dramatically. It was impressive to prevent a loss when the team was on the verge of loading the bases with one out in the top of the fourth inning.

Shin caught Jeong’s ball and calmly threw it home to block the loss. Thanks to this defense, starting pitcher Detrick Ness was able to overcome the crisis and become a winning pitcher.

“This happened once last year,” Shin Min-jae said. “I don’t think I would have thrown (home) if I had held it in place without going in, but I could see the third base runner running home. I threw it home because I thought it would be worth a win.”

Last year, he failed to make the opening entry. Shin, who established himself as a key second baseman in the middle of the season, even won the title. This year, he made the opening entry and started the season together.

When asked if he felt new, Shin Min-jae smiled broadly, saying, “I’ve been playing demonstration games, so it doesn’t come close. However, I think it’s more fun because a lot of fans came.”
