Won Tae-in and other brutal deaths, left Seung-hyun and Lee Ho-sung Samsung’s ‘1st nomination, 1st round’ are finally coming to fruition

Won Tae-in (24), Lee Seung-hyun (22) and Lee Ho-sung (20) are the “native pitchers” who are supporting the starting lineup of the Samsung Lions this season. They have won eight games in total, which is more than half of the 14 wins they have won.스포츠토토

Won Tae-in is ranked first in multiple wins (five wins), and Lee Seung-hyun, who joined the starting lineup late, won two wins (second place in the team) in three games. Lee Ho-sung, who has been reborn as a candidate for the fifth time in five games, secured his first win of the season in a match against the Doosan Bears in Jamsil on the 1st. The ERA of the three players is 2.33.

What they have in common is that they are from the ‘first nomination’ or ‘first round’.

Until now, Samsung had expected first-round picks such as Choi Choong-yeon (2016), Choi Chae-heung (2018), and Hwang Dong-jae (2020), but they did not produce much results. Choi Chae-heung, who won 11 games in 2020, has not been able to find his skills since his discharge from the military (2023), and Hwang Dong-jae bowed his head to the 7-point ERA for the second consecutive year. Only Won Tae-in, the rookie for the 2019 first-round pick, showed steady growth, while other first-round picks did not grow as expected.

Things have changed this year. Lee Seung-hyun, a rookie in the 2021 first round, and Lee Ho-sung, a rookie in the 2023 first round, are standing out.

For three years since his debut, Lee had to play in a must-win group. He was evaluated as the “second Oh Seung-hwan” due to his strong pitching and bold pitching, but he managed to post ERA in the late four-point range for three years. Lee voluntarily converted to starting pitcher and found a way to improve his performance. After joining the starting lineup in mid-April, Lee settled in the rotation by posting quality pitching with two wins and one loss and ERA 1.80.

Lee Ho-sung, who wore a Samsung uniform as a rookie in the first round in 2023, is also playing the starting rotation despite trial and error. Lee Ho-sung, who was dismissed early after failing to complete four innings in all four games, secured his first win of the season by allowing two runs (one earned run) in five and one-third innings in the game on the 1st. “He showed off his confident pitching. I’m looking forward to the next game,” Samsung coach Park Jin-man said, welcoming his performance.

In mid-April, the two new players in the starting lineup showed better-than-expected pitching, erasing the agony of starting the fourth and fifth rounds. Rookie players from the other first round are also progressing smoothly. In 2024, first-round rookie Yuk Sun-yup received starting lessons in the second division and displayed outstanding performance of ERA 2.00 in four games for Futures (second division). On the 1st, he was called up to the first division and made his bullpen debut (one scoreless inning).

In addition, Samsung sent Choi Chae-heung and Hwang Dong-jae to its Japanese team’s driveline last winter. The team provided educational opportunities to slow-growing players. Choi has recently been striving to correct his pitching mechanism at the Baseball Center in the U.S. All three players are attracting attention as promising players who can take the mound as starting pitcher whenever they need substitutes. From Choi to Yuk Seon-yeop, former Samsung first-rounders are bearing fruit little by little.
