KIA Tigers closer Jung Hae-young topped the overall vote in the second interim tally of the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO All-Star Game Best 12 fan voting announced by KBO on the 1st.

Jung Hae-young is on the list of candidates for the closing pitcher category of Nanum All-Star. As of 5 p.m. on the 9th, he won a total of 1,012,173 votes, beating Dream All-Star catcher Yang Eui-ji, who received 1 million, 6,042 votes.

Jung Hae-young was playing in 27 games in the 2024 season until the announcement of the second interim tally, recording a record of 2-1, 18 saves and an ERA of 2.23 in 27 innings. Based on his superior performance than other closing candidates of Nanum All-Star, including Hanwha Eagles Joo Hyun-sang and LG Twins Yoo Young-chan, he virtually booked to play in the All-Star Game at SSG Landers Field in Incheon on July 6.

Ahead of the away match against the SSG Landers in Incheon on Wednesday, Jung said, “I never expected to win the first place in the interim tally of all-star fan voting. Honestly, I just wanted to play in the All-Star game,” before adding, “I never thought I would get this many votes.”

“When it comes to popularity, my team has more Kim Do-young than me. Still, I feel the fans support me a lot,” he said. “I feel that I need to become better at baseball from now on.”

After winning 34 saves as the first full-time finish of the 2021 season, he recorded 32 saves in the 2022 season and 23 saves in the 2023 season, but if he adds two more saves this year, he will achieve more than 20 saves for the fourth consecutive year.

KIA is fiercely competing with the LG Twins for the lead as Jung Hae-young firmly secured the back door for the 2024 season. Unlike the previous seasons, Jung feels a sense of responsibility, burden and thrill as the closing pitcher of the top-ranked team at the same time.

“I feel a lot of weight this year (when I take the mound with saves). Honestly, last year or two years ago, my team fought for the fifth place, but as we fought for the top place this season, I felt a lot why finishing was such a burden. I think we have produced good results so far,” he said.

“I want to keep the No. 1 spot in the All-Star voting until the end, but I can’t do it with my own strength. In the end, our team has to go back to No. 1 and I have to be good at baseball,” he stressed.

Jung is fiercely competing with Oh Seung-hwan of the Samsung Lions in the 2024 season. Oh garnered 19 saves for this season against LG on Tuesday, becoming the lone lead in the relief division.

Jung Hae-young is a representative “Oh Seung-hwan Kids” among pitchers born in 2000 who are currently playing in the KBO league. In 2011, when he first caught a baseball player, he dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player when he saw Oh shoot 54 games, one win and no loss, 47 saves, and an ERA of 0.63.

“It feels like a dream to compete for the title with Oh Seung-hwan. When I started playing baseball in 2011, I was good at Samsung and Oh was at his peak,” Jung said. “I can’t believe I’m competing with Oh for the Save King. I feel proud and happy just to be mentioned in the article.”
